Corporate Daycare Ballistic Fence

An international company has a multi-million dollar campus in a major Midwest city. One of the many benefits for their employees is their own corporate daycare. The one setback of this convenience, however, is the shaky neighborhood it is located in.The neighborhood, once being safe and decent, has now become an area where drive by shootings and other violent acts occur. So much so, that even children are being killed because of it; though none from the corporation thankfully.

To ensure the continued security of their children, the corporation began a search for a ballistic fence that would provide the protection necessary, while maintaining an aesthetic presence that did not detract from the ambiance of the property setting. They did not want a bullet resistant fence with the utilitarian look that would become an eyesore for the surrounding campus and neighborhood.

There were also budget concerns associated with this bullet resistant fence project. While the children’s safety was absolutely paramount, they were conscious of the corporate budget. This need was satisfied as our fence, though not cheap, remains less costly then other ballistic fences.

In our initial dialogue, we had to work through what level of UL-752 of protection they would need. Level 3? Level 8? Level 10? Considering the local gun violence was primarily handguns, the decision to go with our Level 3 bullet resistant fence was an easy and obvious decision.

The scope of the project consisted of a fencing on two sides of the property, and 3 gates. The Bullet resistant fence design was specified for 6 feet high of our ballistic panels, and 2 foot of additional height of our ballistic louvers. The benefit of the bullet resistant louver is it provides the same level of ballistic protection as the panel, yet it allows air flow to pass through the fence and a decreased wind load pressure on the fence. This combination design of panel and louver provides those on the outside of the fence from being able to look in, but allows some visibility for those behind the fence to see out.

Upon completion of this corporate daycare ballistic fence, there was much appreciation from the clients and the city at large. Even the city inspector was blown away by the beauty and clandestine appearance of this bullet resistant fence. He remarked “ I would never have thought that bullet resistant fence could be so beautiful. If I would not known better, I would have no idea it is bullet resistant!”
